In Belgium, protection is provided by the Financial Services Guarantee Fund, a public last-resort instrument. It applies automatically, with no prior formality, to deposits held with an affiliated credit institution: current accounts, savings accounts, term accounts, and registered or dematerialised certificates of deposit. The ceiling is €100,000 per person and per institution, whatever the currency of the account, and it applies to residents and non-residents alike.
What the Belgian guarantee fund really repays, how the ceiling is calculated, how quickly, and what to do with whatever exceeds it.
What exactly does the deposit guarantee cover in Belgium?
In Belgium, protection is provided by the Financial Services Guarantee Fund, a public last-resort instrument. It applies automatically, with no prior formality, to deposits held with an affiliated credit institution: current accounts, savings accounts, term accounts, and registered or dematerialised certificates of deposit. The ceiling is €100,000 per person and per institution, whatever the currency of the account, and it applies to residents and non-residents alike.
The scope has clear boundaries, better known in advance. Shares, investment funds and other financial instruments do not fall under the deposit guarantee: they have a separate regime, capped at €20,000 if the intermediary fails. Insurance products, such as branch 21 life insurance, follow a third regime. Finally, the guarantee covers the failure of the bank, never a fall in the value of an investment: it is a net against insolvency, not against market risk.

The rule is per person and per institution. All your accounts at the same bank are added together, then capped as one: €70,000 in a savings account and €60,000 in a current account at the same institution make €130,000, of which €100,000 is guaranteed. Conversely, €90,000 at each of two different banks protects you up to €180,000 in total. For a joint account, the ceiling is assessed per holder: each of the two co-holders is covered up to €100,000, i.e. €200,000 for the couple's account, each share being presumed equal unless agreed otherwise.
One point of vigilance: several commercial brands may share a single banking licence. The standardised information sheet that every bank hands to its customers lists its trading names: two accounts opened under two brands of the same group may offer only one ceiling. That sheet also states the competent guarantee scheme and the applicable repayment delay.

The legal delay is seven working days: this is what Article 8 of Directive 2014/49/EU provides, a pace reached across the Union since 1 January 2024, after a transitional period. In practice, in Belgium, the procedure is simple: once the failure is established, the Guarantee Fund invites you to communicate a destination account number, via the MyMinfin platform, and then pays out the amount you are entitled to.
One reading point, with no effect on your rights: the Guarantee Fund's FAQ page still shows, depending on the entry, a "current" delay of ten working days, and fifteen working days in its description of the procedure. These displays have not caught up with the latest step of the directive: since 1 January 2024, the legal delay has been seven working days across the Union.
The delay is short, but not zero: during the procedure, your funds are temporarily unavailable. The different scenario in which the bank does not fail but is rescued from within, the bail-in, is covered on the page dedicated to the bail-in.

Certain deposits benefit from a temporarily higher protection, up to €500,000 instead of €100,000. Three categories are concerned: deposits directly linked to buying or selling a private dwelling that serves, served or will serve as the depositor’s main residence, capital linked to life events (lump-sum payments following a retirement, a death excluding inheritance, a dismissal or an invalidity), and compensation payments, in particular to victims of criminal offences or miscarriages of justice.
The reinforced coverage is limited in time: it applies for six months after the amount has been credited, or from the moment those deposits can legally be transferred. The aim is to give the beneficiary time to reallocate a large, one-off sum without exposing it in the meantime to a bank failure. The exact conditions can be checked with the Guarantee Fund or in your bank's information sheet.

The first answer is mechanical: spread. Two ceilings are better than one, and three institutions offer three separate guarantees. For genuinely large amounts, the distinction between deposits (guaranteed) and investments (separate regimes, separate risks) becomes essential: each asset family has its own net, its limits and its horizon.

Frequently asked questions
Which accounts are covered by the deposit guarantee?
Covered are current accounts, savings accounts, term accounts, and certificates of deposit that are registered or dematerialised on registered accounts, whatever the currency. The ceiling is €100,000 per person and per institution. Outside this regime: shares, investment fund units, insurance products and, more broadly, anything that is not a deposit. Those assets have separate regimes, with their own ceilings and conditions.

The ceiling is assessed per holder. On a joint account, each co-holder is covered up to €100,000 for their share, presumed equal between holders unless agreed otherwise. A couple holding a joint account is therefore protected up to €200,000 in total on that account. Each person's share is added to their other personal funds at the same institution, the whole remaining capped at €100,000 per person and per bank.
Source : standard deposit protection information sheet (Crelan, in French). What happens if I hold several accounts at the same bank?
They are added together. The guarantee is not assessed account by account but per depositor and per institution: all your balances at one bank are combined, then capped at €100,000. A simple example: €70,000 in a savings account and €60,000 in a current account at the same institution make €130,000, of which €100,000 is guaranteed.
Source : standard deposit protection information sheet (Crelan, in French). Are shares and funds covered by the deposit guarantee?
No. Financial instruments (shares, bonds, fund units) fall under a separate protection scheme, which covers up to €20,000 if the intermediary holding them for your account fails. That regime applies if the institution can no longer return your securities; it never compensates a fall in the value of the investments themselves. Life insurance follows yet another regime. Distinguishing these nets is the first step towards a correct reading of your wealth.

The European principle is that of the home country: each credit institution belongs to the guarantee scheme of the Member State that authorised it, and the ceiling is harmonised at €100,000 across the Union. A foreign bank serving customers in Belgium therefore in principle falls under the fund of its home country, with the same level of protection. The standardised information sheet, which every bank must hand to its customers, states explicitly which scheme is competent: it is the reference document to consult.
Source : Directive 2014/49/EU (EUR-Lex).Do I need to take any step to be repaid in a bank failure?
No prior registration is required: protection is automatic. Once the failure is established, the Guarantee Fund organises the repayment; in practice, you are invited to communicate the destination account number via the MyMinfin platform, and payment follows within the legal delay of 7 working days. Simply keep your recent statements and watch the Fund's official communications: they set out the procedure when the time comes.
